Description

IBM WebSphere Studio Device Developer for Windows

Productivity through integration

Highlights

  • Provides an integrated development environment (IDE) for building, testing, and deploying JavaTM2 Micro Edition (J2METM) applications that run on wireless devices such as cellular telephones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and handheld computers.
  • Supports Linux and Windows development platforms (see System Requirements below for details).
  • A major, integrated component of the IBM Workplace Client Technology, Micro Edition platform, which packages WebSphere Studio Device Developer with WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment to create an enhanced offering that can assist in the development, testing, and deployment of applications to server-managed clients.
  • Can help development teams create and manage end-to-end e-business solutions that contain components that can be deployed to both the device and the server.
  • In conjunction with WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment, provides an array of production-ready runtime environment alternatives across the more popular devices and device operating systems in the market today, including embedded Linux, Palm OS, and Pocket PC based platforms, and more.
  • Enables the extension of e-business applications based on J2ME profiles and configurations onto "Java PoweredTM" cellular telephones, PDAs, and other pervasive devices to create high-value data services.
  • Contains the new Micro Environment Toolkit for WebSphere Studio, which facilitates the building, testing, and deployment of server-managed client software. Features include:
    • SMF Bundle Development Kit 5.7, which can enable device developers to develop applications and services on IBM''s implementation of the OSGi Services Platform, called the Service Management Framework (SMF).
    • Extension Services 5.7, which provides runtime extensions to SMF so device developers can develop enterprise applications and services using industry standards and a familiar programming model in a connected or disconnected environment.
    • Web Services for Extension Services 5.7, which provides tools that help device developers create device applications that consume Web services such as news, weather, sports, and other up-to-the-minute content hosted on third-party servers.
    • Application Tools for Extension Services 5.7, which helps enable the development of Web applications that run on devices.
  • Combines mobile-device convenience with the power of WebSphere. Enhanced IDE productivity features include:
    • SmartLinkerTM technology for optimizing applications to efficiently use memory on small devices.
    • Support for multiple devices and emulators, including emulators that support the standard Unified Emulator Interface (UEI).
    • Just-in-time (JIT) and ahead-of-time (AOT) compilation technology to speed up portions of applications.
    • "Instant on" application capability, enabled by execute-in-place (XIP) deployment to flash memory on the device.
    • On-target remote debug allows developers to test an application as it runs ''live'' on the device.
    • Provides dynamic install for integration with WebSphere Studio Application Developer, WebSphere Studio Site Developer, and the Nokia Development Suite device deployment facilities.
  • As part of the Workplace Client Technology, Micro Edition platform, includes developers editions of -
    • WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment for developing J2ME applications.
    • WebSphere Everyplace Custom Environment for developing applications for realtime control systems and other devices in closed systems.
  • Supports the Web Services Tool Kit for Mobile Devices, which provides:
    • Tools and runtime environments allowing development of applications using Web Services on small mobile devices, gateway devices, and intelligent controllers.
    • A Java Web service runtime environment supported on J2ME, WebSphere Everyplace Custom Environment, and SMF environments.
    • Easy plug-in installation available as a download for users of WebSphere Studio Device Developer.
